Cliffhanger 6 Hour Paddlegaine 23 March 2024
- Duration: 6 hour
- Year: 2024
- Type: Upside-Down
Cliffhanger is the first WARA event for 2024 - Saturday 23 March. Setters are busy looking for control positions that can be accessed by foot or paddle. Expect to get wet if you want to clear this river based course.
Like last year's Sunrise Surprise course there will be no planning time, with maps distributed once the clock starts. Competitors will need to pay close attention to the control description, as there will be no orange and white markers at controls (just the beeper). Compasses might help, but are not critical.
Drive time from Perth is under 30mins, all on tarmac. Rego from 630, event starting at 7, with BBQ planned at the finish from 1300.
Bring your own kayak, trailing rudder recommended to avoid shallow water hazards. Double plastic sit on top kayaks can be hired from
Setters - Joel and Antoinette
Note - Paddling is optional as the majority of controls will be accessible by foot.
Entries are now open. Closing date will be midnight on the Sunday before the event, 17th March.

2024 Australasian Rogaine Champs
Introducing....
The Mysterious Traveller Rogaine
The 2024 Australasian Rogaine Championships will be hosted in WA on the weekend of 7th and 8th September 2024.
Where is the Mysterious Traveller? A mask, an old logging village, a Melburnian forester, and ochre springs. We may need to navigate complex river valleys (150m a.s.l. to 300m a.s.l.). There may be a few pines, but we are mostly in stunning Jarrah - Marri - Blackbutt forest. We leave the open Nannup farmlands of 2016 far behind. We have a very easy trip here - less than 3hrs southish of Perth and less than 1hr Bunbury. For all travellers, far, near, mysterious or not, the Event Bus will take you on a magical tour from the airport to the event via a replenishing town. The Setting and Vetting team look forward to showing you some topographical mysteries!
February update - a revision to the location - now 3hrs south of Perth.
Keep on Tracking Winter 24 Hour - 18-19 June 2022
- Duration: 24 hour
- Year: 2022
- Type: State Champs
The Winter 24 hour State Championship rogaine will be somewhat different to previous events. We will not need to erect our usual Hash House and Admin tents as we will be using the onsite facilities. The rogaine site is about two hours driving south east of the eastern suburbs of Perth. A few kilometers of gravel leads to a reasonably flat area where camping will be available for tents and caravans on Friday and Saturday nights with a slightly more restricted camping area than the usual. The rogaine country will be mainly forest and some farm areas. You will not need to cross many fences. The forest is mostly open with little scrub. The area contains a large number of tracks varying from good to impassable by vehicle. Hence the name of the event. The map will be of A3 size and the scale will be 1:50,000. Expect to see and hear lots of native animals. Hurdles of fallen trees are skillfully placed to catch tired legs and to provide a habitat for some of the animals.
Adult $60, Junior (10 - 18) $30, Child (under 10) Free
The Containers for Change 12 Hour Rogaine - 14 May 2022
- Duration: 12 hour
- Year: 2022
As a state, Western Australia has become very adept at recycling, and it is in this sentiment that we bring you the “Containers for Change Rogaine”. Set in a wonderful location (which is recycled) a little over an hour from Perth in excellent gully spur terrain.
The hash site (also recycled) will be in the small amount of farmland which has been loaded with controls for those who don’t wish to venture into the bushland too far. The bushland has some very well defined (yes that’s code for steep) areas and more broad terrain with a great mixture of vegetation with a predominantly open feel.
There is plenty of wildlife for those who will take the time to enjoy the views and some challenging controls for the competitive teams. There are one or two recycled controls too just in staying with the theme.
Luke VanBaaren and Will Blackshaw have dodged Bushfires and Heatwaves to set the event and are being kept honest by David Tapley and Tony Almond in the vetting space.
Entries close Wednesday midnight 10 days prior to event

What is Rogaining?
Rogaining is the sport of long distance cross-country navigation in which teams of two to five members visit as many checkpoints as possible in twenty-four hours. Teams travel entirely on foot, navigating by map and compass between checkpoints in terrain that varies from open farmland to hilly forest. A central base camp provides hot meals throughout the event and teams may return at any time to eat, rest or sleep. Teams travel at their own pace and anyone from children to grandparents can experience the personal satisfaction that comes from cross-country navigation at their own level of competition and comfort.
